Raise your hand if you've ever spent hours prepping a lesson, only to have your students stare blankly when you mention a cultural reference? Yeah, me too. Teaching about holidays and seasons can be tricky, especially when our students come from all over the world. They simply might not have the same associations we do!

That's why I created this ESL lesson about Cozy Autumn Movies. It's designed to bridge that cultural gap while building key vocabulary and conversation skills. Forget dry grammar drills; let's talk about feelings, film, and the magic of autumn!

What's Inside This ESL Lesson?

This lesson focuses on five well-known films that evoke the feeling of autumn: When Harry Met Sally, Practical Magic, Pride and Prejudice, Twilight, and Little Women. Your students will:

  • Start with a fun "This or That?" warm-up to activate prior knowledge about fall activities.
  • Learn key vocabulary related to film, feelings, and the autumn season.
  • Read short descriptions of each movie and answer comprehension questions.
  • Engage in discussion prompts that encourage personal expression and cultural connection.

How to Use This Lesson in Your ESL Classroom:

  1. Spice up Vocabulary: Before reading, write some key vocab from the text on the board (e.g., 'nostalgic,' 'atmospheric,' 'iconic'). Have students work in pairs to guess the meanings from context, then check with a dictionary. After the reading, challenge them to use the words in sentences about their own favorite movies or autumn experiences.
  2. "Movie Pitch" Speaking Activity: After the reading, have students choose one of the movies and prepare a short "movie pitch" to convince a classmate to watch it. They should focus on using descriptive language and expressing their personal feelings about the film. This is great practice for persuasive speaking!
  3. Creative Writing Extension: Assign a short creative writing task. For example: "Imagine you are living in the world of one of these movies. Write a diary entry describing a typical autumn day." This encourages deeper engagement with the themes and vocabulary of the lesson.
