How to start teaching English online: A beginner's guide

By Sami IrmatovJanuary 14, 2026

Teaching English online is the dream, right? No commute, you can wear pajama bottoms, and you can work with people all over the world. But getting started can feel overwhelming. Here is exactly what you need to do to get your first paycheck.

Step 1: Get the Gear

You don't need a professional studio, but you do need three things: 1. A stable internet connection (use a cable, not just Wi-Fi). 2. A decent headset with a microphone. 3. Good lighting. If your students can't see your mouth moving, they can't learn how to pronounce words.

Step 2: Pick Your Platform

There are two ways to do this. You can work for a big company (like Preply, Italki, or Cambly) where they find the students for you, but they take a cut of your money. Or, you can find your own students on social media. If you are a beginner, start with a platform. It’s the easiest way to get experience.

Step 3: Find Your 'Niche'

Don't just say 'I teach English.' Say 'I help doctors pass the OET exam' or 'I help kids enjoy reading.' If you specialize in one thing, you can charge way more money. Think about what you are already good at and connect it to English.

Step 4: Your First Lesson is a Sales Pitch

Most online teachers offer a free trial. Use this time to find out what the student wants. Don't just teach a random lesson. Show them exactly how you will help them reach their goal. If they want to move to Canada, show them a plan for that. If they feel like you have a plan, they will sign up for 10 more lessons.
