Fun ESL games for teenagers who are bored: Keeping it cool

Teenagers are the hardest group to teach. If they think a game is 'for babies,' they will roll their eyes and pull out their phones. To get them excited, you need games that involve strategy, a bit of 'acting,' and maybe a little bit of healthy competition.
Game 1: The Mafia Game
This is a legendary game for a reason. One or two students are 'The Mafia,' and the rest are 'Citizens.' Every 'night,' the Mafia picks someone to 'kill' (remove from the game). During the 'day,' the class has to debate in English who they think the Mafia is. It gets them arguing, defending themselves, and using tons of natural language.
Game 2: Two Truths and a Lie
This is perfect for practicing the past tense. Each student tells the class three things they did over the weekend—two are true, and one is a lie. The other students have to ask questions to figure out which one is the lie. It feels like a real conversation, not a grammar drill.
Game 3: Taboo
Give a student a card with a word, like 'Hamburger.' Underneath, put words they *can't* say, like 'Food,' 'McDonald's,' or 'Bread.' They have to describe the main word to the class without using the 'taboo' words. It forces them to get creative with their vocabulary.
The Secret Tip
Let them use their phones for the games! Use apps like Kahoot or Blooket. If you can't beat the technology, use it to your advantage. Teenagers love anything that feels like a real game and not a school lesson.
